Executive Summary

APEC Climate Center (APCC) provides East Asia and global seasonal forecast, BSISO forecast, and climate monitoring information through the APCC homepage so that climate information can be used more valuable in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to simple climate information delivery through the website, various climate information services have been established and serviced to users so that users can more effectively utilize produced/collected/processed climate data. APCC's climate information service can be classified into three main categories as follows. Firstly, as a tool for providing climate data and information, there is a platform-based climate data service that replaces the existing APCC Data Service System (ADSS) that allows users to download climate data digitally. Second, as a climate information production tool, the CLIK(Climate Information toolKit), that can produce MME (Multi-Model Ensemble) prediction and verification information through various climate model combinations, and that also make a downscaling prediction for each station, have been integrated into the APCC climate service platform. The CLIPs (Climate Information Processing System), which can extract only necessary data from the user-set region, variable, and period, and the OpenWPS (Open Web Processing Service), which provides masking information based on geographic information for precise data extraction, has been integrated into the platform. Finally, there is the APCC Integrated Modeling Solution(AIMS), a client software that produces statistical downscaling and evaluation information on seasonal forecasts and climate change scenarios.

Not only the stable operation and improvement of APCC climate information services but also efforts to exchange and spread internally and externally the technology of APCC climate information services. In addition, more systematic operations and strengthened user support in operating climate information services are continuously being pursued, and provide our best support for the joint establishment and operation of the ESGF data node and climate prediction system cooperative development system based on the demand of the NIMS (National Institute of Meteorological Sciences).

This project is the operation and improvement task of the climate prediction production and provision system, which is part of the 5th stage of the Asia Pacific climate information service and R&D project of the APEC Climate Center. It consists of detailed tasks of improving APCC climate information service in 2019 and establishing ESGF Asia Pacific

database, operating and improving APCC climate information service in 2020, and improving and integrated development of APCC climate information service in 2021. In 2019, the goal was to stably operate and improve APCC climate information services, establish a representative climate database in the Asia-Pacific region of ESGF, and 2020 achieve goals centered on exchange and spread internally and externally the technology of APCC climate information service with the stable operation and improvement of the service. In 2021, the last year, R&D was conducted on various topics for integration and improvement of APCC climate information services, diversification of measures to support climate information services for internal and external technology exchange and spread, and establishment and expansion of the climate prediction system cooperative development system. The main R&D achievements achieved through the projects at this stage are as follows. First of all, in 2019, “1) Provide various climate model prediction information according to the expansion of the MME participation model, 2) Improve the APCC Climate Data Service (ADSS) system, 4) Improve the online climate prediction information application tool (CLIK), 5) Technical cooperation workshop, 6) ESGF international data node establishment and CORDEX-EA phase 2 data provision” was achieved. The following achievements in 2020 include “1) establishment and operation of climate information service operation monitoring system, 2) APCC climate information service training workshop, 3) climate information service customer support (help desk), and 4) sharing of improvement information of the climate information system (release note) establishment and operation”, and achieved the goal of enhancing user service support performance indicators. In 2021, the last year, for climate information service improvement and integrated development, including “1) Timely provision of individual climate model data through algorithm improvement, 2) Reinforcement of online multi-model ensemble seasonal prediction service, 3) Integration and service for downscaling prediction service, 4 ) climate data processing service integration and improvement based on regional masking information, 5) Reinforcement of publicity by conducting climate information service education workshops, 6) Diversification of user support methods through distribution of climate service platfrom tutorial, 7) Survey on efficient model data management system and technology, 8) Survey on R&D Platform Technology”, we achieved the integrated development of individual climate information services as a platform was completed, and achievements for user support and publicity were achieved. Also two technical reports about survey was submitted.
