The APEC Climate Center (APCC) partnered with Seoul National University and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to host a regional training workshop in Nadi, Fiji, from April 20 to 22, 2026. The event brought together around 40 participants, including climate prediction officers from the meteorological agencies of 14 Pacific Island nations, as well as key stakeholders from climate-sensitive sectors like water resources and agriculture.

Pacific Island nations face unique and urgent threats from climate change. This workshop was designed to help these countries build their own climate data analysis skills and establish a strong regional cooperation system to better respond to climate crises. During the event, participants received in-depth, practical training on how to best use the Pacific Island Countries Advanced Seasonal Outlook (PICASO), a customized climate prediction system tailored specifically for the region.

To maximize the impact of the event, APCC combined two of its major international cooperation projects into this single workshop. The first is a resilience-building project for five Pacific Island nations, conducted in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The second is Phase 3 of the Republic of Korea-Pacific Islands Climate Prediction Service project, carried out with Seoul National University using the ROK-PIF Cooperation Fund supported by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bringing these two initiatives together has been highly praised for making regional training much more efficient and for strengthening international partnerships.
