The APEC Climate Center (APCC), in partnership with the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peruvian Government, hosted the "2024 APEC Climate Symposium" at the Lima Convention Center in Peru over two days, from August 12 to 13, 2024. The symposium focused on the theme of "Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Society Through Enhanced Response and Preparedness for the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)."
ENSO refers to a climate phenomenon that encompasses El Niño, the warming of sea surface temperatures off the coasts of Peru and Chile, and the Southern Oscillation, a shift in atmospheric pressure over the western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean. ENSO can lead to extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves.
During the 2024 APEC Climate Symposium, participants shared the latest research findings and expertise on the relationship between climate change and ENSO, and discussed strategies for response and preparedness. The event provided an in-depth platform for global climate scientists, climate change scholars, and representatives from APEC region governments and international organizations to engage in detailed discussions.
The symposium also brought together diverse groups of participants with expertise in climate research, application and policymaking in order to seek cooperation to strengthen member economies’ scientific and technical capacities to combat climate change.
