APEC Climate Center (APCC) will be the first among the research institutes in Korea to participate in a GCF (Green Climate Fund) Supported Project.

The project, named “Climate Information Services for Resilient Development Planning in Vanuatu (Van-CIS-RDP, 27 million USD, 6 implementing entities)”, was selected as one of GCF supported projects during the 15th GCF Board Meeting held between December 13th and 15th of 2016 in Apia, Samoa. It was proposed by SPREP (Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme), an intergovernmental forum of Pacific island nations focused on environmental issues. APCC will be participating in the project as an implementing entity.

The project aims to promote the application of climate information in the five climate change sensitive sectors of Vanuatu, including tourism, agriculture, infrastructure, water resources and fisheries. It was proposed by SPREP to the GCF as a project supported by the GCF funds with APCC as an implementing agency.

The total budget of the Van-CIS-RDP project is 27 million USD, of which 23 million will be supported by the GCF while UNDP and the government of Vanuatu will provide 2 million each. Six entities, including APCC, will be participating in the project for four years and three months from April 2017 to June 30th of 2021. APCC will be responsible for increasing the resilience against risks and disasters in the agriculture sector due to climate change, such as floods, droughts, pests and disease, through the application of climate information.

The entities in the project include SPREP, responsible for developing and implementing projects and the efficient management of the budget created by the GCF, and the implementing agencies of APEC Climate Center; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO); Bureau of Meteorology, Australia (BoM); University of South Pacific; and the Secretariat of the Pacific Communities.

In recent years, APCC has carried out numerous climate information service projects in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region. With a background in well-received and globally recognized projects, the APCC has been able to become the first Korean research institute to participate in a GCF funded project.

This accomplishment will be a stepping stone for the APEC Climate Center to more actively participate in climate change response initiatives of international organizations.
