5. Abstract
Monsoon is the lifeline of rain dependent agriculture in India and provides both water and food security to over a billion people living in the sub-continent. Any changes beyond the expected current climate variability limits in the seasonal mean or sub-seasonal aspects of monsoon could adversely impact the well being of people. Therefore, understanding potential impacts of global warming on the seasonal mean as well as on various sub-seasonal features of monsoon in the future under different emission scenarios is of great importance for developing mitigatory and adaptation strategies. An assessment on expected future changes in the Indian monsoon based on simulations from a large suite of CMIP5 models will be presented. Comparisons will be drawn, where needed, with the assessments made earlier using CMIP3 suite of models. While a systematic evaluation of improvements, if any, in simulating various features of monsoon from CMIP3 to CMIP5 will be a focus, the future shifts in the seasonal mean and sub-seasonal characteristic like the onset, duration, withdrawal, intra-seasonal oscillations, extremes in precipitation and temperature under different greenhouse gas emission scenarios will be examined. While the global model simulations will form the basis for assessing seasonal mean changes, the sub-seasonal aspects will be assessed using a suite of regional climate simulations made with PRECIS using lateral boundary conditions from Hadley Center global models. A general overview of expected future changes in aspects of different monsoon systems across the globe based on CMIP5 suite of simulations will also be presented.
