APCC, UNEP, SPREP and WMO Co-hosted the 3rd Joint Regional Training Workshop on Enhancing Climate Information Services for Resilience in 5 Island Countries of the Pacific Ocean

The APEC Climate Center (APCC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Environment Program (SPREP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) co-hosted 'the 3rd Joint Regional Training Workshop on Enhancing Climate Information and Knowledge Services for resilience in 5 Island Countries of the Pacific Ocean' between 14th and 18th October, 2024 in Nukualofa the Kingdom of Tonga. 5 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Pacific are the Cook Islands, Niue, Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and Tuvalu.

 

This regional training workshop was held as part of the transformative programme, “Enhancing Climate Information and Knowledge Services for resilience in 5 island countries of the Pacific Ocean”, initiated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). APCC is participating in this programme as a technical partner.

 

During this joint regional training workshop, APCC researchers conducted the lectures on climate prediction and implemented training programs on the utilization of the Pacific Island Countries Advanced Seasonal Outlook (PICASO) system as well as the production methods of seasonal outlook. For the 3rd regional Joining training workshop, participants from 14 Pacific Island Countries were welcomed for the first time.  

 

By so doing, APCC and UNEP promote to upgrade the enhancement of the climate prediction and climate information utilization capabilities of the meteorological offices of the five Pacific island countries. It is expected to enhance the resilience capacity of these regions against climate change.
