As one of the key strategies, the role of a testbed for the transition of research to operation (R2O) has become prominent. APCC is engaged in joint development by playing a bridging role as a testbed to expedite the operationalization of newly developed prediction techniques.
For the developed prediction techniques to be applied in actual operational settings, it is essential to assess their effects in the same environment as the operational conditions. Therefore, the operationalization assessment in the testbed is conducted under conditions identical to those in the actual operational environment. This evaluation considers both scientific effectiveness and technical efficiency to ensure a stable operational forecast.
Two technologies were applied in 2023 , namely ① the loosely coupled initialization technique developed at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and ② a subseasonal-scale climate prediction technology based on sea ice physics processes developed at Pusan National University (PNU).
APCC has established an environment capable of conducting plenty of quasi-operational prediction experiments, and our expertise has been solidified through the accumulation of multi-year research on using GloSea6.
The APCC’s testbed bridges climate model developers and operational agencies, accelerating the cyclical process of “basic technique development → operationalization assessment → enhanced operational forecast”. APCC has become a hub for domestic collaboration that facilitates the practical use of climate model research outcomes.
